SSND-SPIKE
Recommended for open bore options
The SPIKE is a textured, four-sided sounding rod with a uniform 9.5mm working length, a flared retention flange, and a narrow retention valley near the entry for extended, secure placement. Available in 8", 10", and 12" lengths.
Details
- Entry tip: ~9.5 mm (28 Fr), softly rounded four-sided profile
- Main shaft: 9.5 mm (28 Fr), textured
- Flared retention flange: 10 mm (30 Fr)
- Retention valley: 8 mm (24 Fr)
- Available lengths: 8", 10", 12"
How it works
The softly rounded, four-sided tip eases past the opening with minimal resistance, then the shaft holds a consistent 9.5mm textured surface for steady tactile engagement. A 10mm flared section creates an anchor point just above the shaft, and an 8mm retention valley sits right at the entry, letting the surrounding tissue hold the piece comfortably in place for extended wear. A safety flange at the base prevents over-insertion.
Choosing your silicone firmness
Bob recommends #10 (Medium) as the primary choice — it provides structural integrity for easier insertion without bowing, along with clear tactile feedback from the texture.
Color options
#18 and #30 are available in pure translucent. #00-20, #00-50, and #10 base colors are translucent white and can be mixed with any standard color.
Please note
This falls in our beginner tier at 9.5mm. The 8" length stays in the earlier part of the canal; the full 12" length reaches into the prostatic urethra and bladder region, which calls for intermediate-to-advanced technique.
Use appropriate lubrication and never force insertion. Stop immediately if you experience pain, bleeding, or significant discomfort. Inspect the sound before each use and do not use it if damaged.
